Responsible to: Principals (Scott Marshall and Lisa Marshall) and Vice-Principal
Responsible for: All junior members of Musical Theatre teaching staff
Internal/External Contacts: Senior Managers, Students, UK and International Industry Professionals
1. Role Overview
The Head of Musical Theatre will lead and inspire a vibrant department, fostering a culture of creativity, excellence, and professionalism. The ideal candidate will have a clear vision for the artistic and educational growth of students up to 18 years of age, preparing them for exams, performances, and potential professional careers. This position involves managing day-to-day departmental operations, directing musical theatre productions, and collaborating closely with both staff and students to ensure high-quality teaching and performances.
2. Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Departmental Development
- Lead the Musical Theatre department, setting high standards for teaching and student performance.
- Develop and implement a strategic plan for the department, ensuring innovation and progression in all areas of musical theatre education.
- Mentor and support junior teaching staff, ensuring continuous professional development and a collaborative working environment.
Artistic and Educational Direction
- Oversee the artistic development of students, enhancing both their technical abilities and creative expression.
- Teach on the BTEC International Level 3 Performing Arts Programme
- Teach singing on a one-to-one basis, ensuring students of all levels develop strong vocal technique and performance skills.
- Serve as director for productions, ensuring high-quality performance.
- Develop and direct at least one full-length musical theatre production annually, in addition to supporting two other major productions throughout the year.
- Design and implement a curriculum that aligns with industry standards and fosters student growth, preparing them for exams, auditions, and professional opportunities.
Production and Performance Management
- Collaborate with heads of department, production teams, and external creatives to design, stage, and produce high-quality performances.
- Oversee all stages of production, from initial concept and pre-production planning to final performance, ensuring smooth execution and artistic integrity.
- Manage auditions, rehearsals, and student performances to maintain professional standards.
Operational Management
- Plan, schedule, and oversee the department’s classes, rehearsals, and events, ensuring alignment with the broader goals of Diverse Performing Arts Center.
- Maintain health and safety standards across all teaching practices, rehearsals, and performances.
- Manage departmental resources and budgets, optimising for both creativity and cost-efficiency.
- Foster relationships with industry professionals to provide students with real-world insight and opportunities.
3. Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum of 2 years teaching experience in musical theatre; experience leading a department or team is preferable.
- Proven ability to teach musical theatre in both group and one-to-one settings.
- Experienced director with the ability to arrange and direct dramatic and musical elements of theatre productions.
- Industry experience in performing arts, with a deep understanding of professional musical theatre standards and expectations.
- Strong creative vision, capable of transforming scripts into compelling, innovative productions.
- Extensive knowledge of musical theatre repertoire, vocal/movement techniques, and performance history.
- Charismatic, hard-working, and able to work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
- Proven ability to inspire and mentor students of all levels, from beginner to pre-professional.
4. Desirable
- Experience teaching BTEC Level 3 in Performing Arts.
- Where possible, play piano to support rehearsals, classes, and student performances.
- Industry connections or professional experience that can offer students unique insights into the world of musical theatre.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related subject
Salary: 20,000 AED per month (approximately – commensurate with experience)
